MONDAY/TUESDAY OCTOBER 13/14: Research Questions: Dante's Inferno!
WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 24/25: Due to technical difficulties, I can't upload today's PowerPoint. Extra Credit to those who did the assignment anyway, which is to finish the TWIST on Shakespeare's Sonnet 29.
The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd
The Passionate Shepherd to His Love
WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17/18: POWERPOINT LINK HERE SEE SLIDES 11-14 FOR HOMEWORK.
ESSAY DUE DATE CHANGED!!!! I'VE PUSHED THE DUE DATE BACK TO MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, IN ORDER TO GIVE YOU ONE MORE WEEKEND. SEE "MEDIEVAL UNIT ESSAY TOPICS" FOR YOUR CHOICES.
DUE THURSDAY/FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4/5: Find and read the following four sources,
AND ONE ADDITIONAL SOURCE OF YOUR OWN CHOOSING, on monks and monasticism.
Describe the daily life, values, and beliefs of western monks; as well as the history of monasticism in Western Europe.
Cite your sources.
THEN: To what extant does “The Monk” in the Canterbury Tales live up to the
ideal? Create a comparison/contrast chart to use in discussion on Thursday/Friday
“Columbanus to His Monks,” primary source
“Religious Observances in Dunkirk, 1662,” primary source
“Monasticism, Origins” Dictionary of the Middle Ages
“Benedict of Nursia”
AND ONE OF YOUR OWN CHOOSING
In your notes: relevant information from 4-5
different sources=”A”; 3=”B”; 2= “C”. I am looking at number of sources,
and relevant information bits here; NOT so much quantity of information,
but quality.
DUE TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2/3: Read "The Monk's Tale." You will need to use the online text as this is not in your books. Write a "Ten Line Summary." By that I mean, stop after every ten lines your read, and write one sentence, summarizing what you just read.
DUE MONDAY/TUESDAY, AUGUST 25/26: Read "The Pardoner's Tale." Take Cornell notes on “The Pardoner’s Tale” as a satire. What exactly is being literally described versus being satirized? Why does Chaucer use satire? Is Chaucer
satirizing human nature or the Church as an establishment?
DUE MONDAY/TUESDAY, AUGUST 18/19: Read "The Wife of Bath's Prologue and Tale." In your notes, consider the seminar question: Is the Wife of Bath from The Canterbury Tales a feminist? Use textual evidence to support your position.
Create one to two "researchable questions" as we are going to the library on Monday/Tuesday to answer them. You might consider gathering information on the position of women during Chaucer's time, as this will help you formulate a position statement. Other ideas: representation of women in Medieval literature; medieval woman; medieval period for women; important quotes from the Wife of Bath's Tale; stereotypes of women in medieval times; misogyny in medieval times; what is feminism?
DUE WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY, AUGUST 20/21: Create a position statement on the seminar question: Is the Wife of Bath from The Canterbury Tales a feminist? Be prepared to use textual evidence to support your position (i.e., have good notes! in addition to notes, use stickies in the text if you wish. They really help me).
